Sulfates and Silicones in Products Are Not Necessarily Bad For You

Sulfates

Sulfates are classified as surfactants in cosmetics. Surfactants, also known as surface active agent, reduces surface tension to increase spreadability which efficiently enhances the cleansing properties of the product.

Sulfates present in shampoos will more effectively capture dirt, debris, grease and get rid of buildup during the rinsing process. Moreover, it may help the active ingredients to work deeper into the hair, maximizing its effectiveness. The commonly used surfactants found in shampoo are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES).

Sulfate-free shampoos are usually less foamy and will require more vigorous massage on the scalp to keep the hair clean. People also tend to compensate for the lack of lathering effect of sulfate-free shampoo by using more of the product. On the other hand, shampoos containing sulfate can effectively lather up quickly and keep the scalp clean with minimal effort. Therefore, it is especially beneficial for those with oilier scalp and those with dandruff to use shampoo with sulfates.

Do note that for people with sensitive hair and skin, shampoos containing sulfates may cause some mild side effects, such as dry, brittle hair, and dryness or redness of the scalp. This can be prevented by ensuring that the hair is wet thoroughly and not over-shampoo or lather your hair for too long. Other than the above, sulfate present in shampoos are generally safe.

Silicones

Silicones are classified as emollient in cosmetics. Emollient acts as a protective barrier to trap and prevent the loss of moisture in the skin. They are moisturizing ingredients that soften the skin, help keep it supple, and decrease inflammation, so the skin feels more comfortable.

Silicones increase spreadability and improve the sensory of cosmetics such as cream or make-up by giving them a silky and luxurious texture. Whereas in hair care products such as shampoo, silicone provides shine and softness. It also helps to block out evaporation of moisture from the hair, potentially keeping the hair hydrated.

Haircare products containing silicones help to tame frizz, smooth hair strands and add slip for detangling. For people with coarse, dry and frizzy hair, using shampoos containing silicones will benefit them the most.

Common types of silicone ingredients in cosmetics include cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane, dimethicone and cetearyl methicone.
